Outpatient orthopedic surgery has returned to the former North Adams Regional Hospital about 11 months after the hospital abruptly closed its doors. Two of four operating rooms have been renovated as part of a $6 million investment at the site now-owned by Berkshire Health Systems. After receiving state permits and installing brand-new equipment the rooms are open for outpatient orthopedic surgery, according to BHS spokesman Michael Leary.

“That would be same day surgery for people in need of certain orthopedic repairs that would not require joint replacement,” said Leary.

BHS has hired about 250 of the 530 people who lost their jobs when North Adams Regional closed in March 2014. Community members and the Massachusetts Nurses Associationhave urged BHS to reopen a full-service hospital.
