Vermont Progressive Party Continues Support Of Universal Health Care

The Vermont Progressive Party has reaffirmed its support for a universal, publicly funded health care system for the state.

A resolution passed at a weekend meeting of the Vermont Progressive Party's State Committee that says Vermont should push ahead with health care reform. It comes more than two months after Gov. Peter Shumlin scrapped his long-standing plan for a single-payer health care system.

Shumlin said he would not ask lawmakers this year to adopt a financing plan for such a health care system, calling it too expensive for Vermont's economy to absorb.

The Progressive party says it would also support incremental steps toward universal health care such as universal free primary care or universal free hospital care if they are publicly financed through taxes based on the ability to pay.
