UMass Names Presidential Search Committee

The University of Massachusetts has launched a search to find a new president of the state university system.

The UMass Board of Trustees appointed a 21-member search committee Friday to conduct a “wide-ranging and comprehensive” search for a new president.  It will also be a speedy one.  UMass spokesman Robert Connolly said the plan is to hire a new president by July 1st to avoid having to name an interim president.

" That is an ambitious schedule, but the board is committed to it, and there is optimism that it can be done, " said Connolly.

Robert Caret is leaving in June after four years as UMass President to become Chancellor of the University of Maryland.

The search committee is chaired by Robert Manning, a former Chairman of the UMass Board of Trustees. It includes faculty members and current students and some business leaders who not formally affiliated with UMass.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
