Public Show Of Support Urged For Rebuilding Cathedral High School

A group campaigning to convince church leaders to build a new Catholic high school in Springfield, Massachusetts is planning a big show of public support Tuesday.

Organizers of “Save Cathedral High School Day” are calling on people to wear purple—the school color – and to post pictures of people wearing purple on social media throughout the day.  The day will be capped with a late afternoon rally on the steps of Springfield City Hall. Al Dilascia, co-chair of the Committee for Cathedral Action, said they want to show Springfield Bishop Mitchell Rozanski that there is broad support for rebuilding the historic school that was wrecked by a tornado more than 3 years ago.

"Our goal: We've got the money, no further delays, rebuild the new Cathedral," said Dilascia.

The diocese has raised concerns about Cathedral’s plummeting enrollment and  the need to raise millions for a tuition endowment fund.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
