City Councilors To Discuss Casino Construction Plans

MGM Springfield

City councilors in Springfield, Massachusetts plan to meet Monday with representatives from MGM to discuss casino construction plans.

City Council President Mike Fenton said he will set an aggressive permitting schedule for 2015 to facilitate major construction work on the $800 million casino. There will be public hearings on streets closings and other land use issues the council must act on.  Fenton said he also wants to begin preliminary discussions on using the casino revenue.

"What I want to be sure of is the council plays a role as a watchdog and safeguard to make sure that money does not just go into the black hole of the general fund."

Fenton said he plans to introduce a casino ethics ordinance.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
