Veterans Affairs Chief Wooing Medical Students

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

The head of the Department of Veterans Affairs is working to attract young medical professionals to the VA system.

Secretary Robert McDonald was at the University of Vermont Monday where he told a room full of students working for the VA is a higher calling.

Since McDonald became head of the embattled VA in July he has worked to improve the quality of care offered to veterans. The department has been criticized over long wait times for veterans seeking care.

A long-term goal is to hire more doctors and nurses.

One enticement is a new plan that will provide up to $120,000 in debt relief.

McDonald was accompanied by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.

McDonald is headed next to Lebanon, New Hampshire, where he is to make a similar pitch.
