Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant before decommissioning

The Texas facility where the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant ships its low-level radioactive waste may be poised to grow.

At a meeting of the bi-state commission that oversees waste shipments on Thursday, the president of the company that owns the waste disposal site says it is seeing so much demand that it has sought permission from the state of Texas to triple in size.

The Rutland Herald and Times Argus report that Waste Control Specialists President Rodney Baltzer says the company also is interested in building a high-level radioactive waste facility.

Vermont Yankee is set to close at the end of the year, and its eventual decommissioning is expected to cause the volume of waste being shipped to jump.
