Construction is about to begin on a new $33 million science building at Westfield State University, a project that played prominently in last year’s standoff between the former university president and Massachusetts education officials
University officials say construction of the new science center will start in August, with a ceremonial ground-breaking scheduled on September 18th. Last year, Massachusetts Higher Education Commissioner Richard Freeland froze funding for the project demanding university trustees act on allegations of reckless spending by then-president Evan Dobelle.
Freeland released the funds after trustees put Dobelle on paid leave. Dobelle later retired. He has a federal lawsuit pending against trustees and Freeland.
