People opposing a proposed natural gas pipeline that would carry fracked gas from Pennsylvania through New York and Massachusetts are holding a rally in Boston Common today. The rally is a culmination of a biking and walking march that starting July 6th in Richmond following the pipeline’s proposed route ending in Dracut. Taking part in the rally is Rosemary Wessel, a member of the group No Fracked Gas in Mass. Though the pipeline would be 30 miles from Boston, Wessel says with the legislative session ending Thursday now is the perfect time.

“It’s a chance to address all of the legislators really on their home turf,” Wessel said while on her way to Boston Wednesday morning. “Especially this week they are going to the end of their session so we know it’s a full house.”

The protestors are asking Governor Deval Patrick and state lawmakers to oppose a ratepayer tariff that would help fund the pipeline. A group of Western Massachusetts state lawmakers are opposing the pipeline proposal, which falls under federal jurisdiction.

The rally is scheduled to go from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.
