A native of Baltimore, Maryland has been appointed to lead the Roman Catholic Church in western Massachusetts.
Bishop Mitchell Rozanski said he already felt at home as he was introduced Thursday as the new leader of the Springfield Diocese. Rozanski, who was ordained a parish priest in the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 1984, and became auxiliary bishop there in 2004 said he’ll follow the tone set by Pope Francis as he gets to know his new territory.
"Just bringing the joy and love of the gospel to others. That is the agenda I have right now."
Rozanski was Vicar of Hispanics in Baltimore, and vocal in support of welcoming immigrants to the church. He is the first Polish-American bishop of the Springfield diocese, which has a sizable Polish population.
