Conn. Gov. Malloy Launches Operational Review Of Norwalk Bridge, Calls For Replacement

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloyheld an emergency meeting with representatives from New York City’s commuter rail system Monday afternoon. It was in response to a 118 year-old Metro North bridge that has failed twice in less than two week.

Malloy says the state is partnering with Metro-Northon an operational review of the Walk Bridge in Norwalk. The Democrat says it will be completed by mid-July.

“We are now seeing the effects of decades of neglect when it comes to investing in our infrastructure,” said Malloy.

While $9 million worth of repairs are set to be completed in December, Malloy is urging the federal government to fund what would a $460 million replacement project, something he says was wrongly delayed before he took office in 2011.

“Design was restarted in December of 2013 that identified a recommendation for a new bridge, not a swing bride,” said the governor.

The bridge was stuck in the open position Friday, the second time in eight days, delaying thousands of commuters into and out of New York City.
