Crime-fighting Plan To Be Presented At Public Meeting

The incoming police commissioner in Springfield, Massachusetts is going to unveil a crime-fighting plan.

Incoming Springfield Police Commissioner John Barbieri says he has a five point strategic plan, that he will detail at a public forum Monday evening at the Van Sickle Middle School.  Barbieri says it includes more pro-active police patrols and a real time response to crime trends

"If my vision is successful it will involve mutual collaboration to improve the conditions in this city to affect fear of crime, crime and the conditions that foster crime."

As a deputy chief, Barbieri has overseen an innovative community policing program that is credited with dramatically reducing gang violence in one Springfield neighborhood.  Barbieri will take over as police commissioner on June 1st.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
