Theater enthusiasts can add another event to the typically busy schedule of cultural attractions in the Berkshires this summer.

With the support of the Pittsfield Cultural Council as well as area business and theater groups, eight free outdoor performances of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be held at the city’s Springside Park in July. Enrico Spada is founder and director of Pittsfield Shakespeare in the Park. He noted how influential Shakespeare remains, 450 years after he was born.

“There’s a reason why we are still celebrating this dead writer’s birthday so many years later,” Spada said. “It’s because his stories and the themes he writes about are huge, they’re bold and they’re timeless.”

At a kickoff event Tuesday, Spada announced a fundraising campaign with amounts to be matched by area businesses.
