VT Bill Calls For Study Of Rural Police Coverage

The Vermont House has endorsed a bill calling for a study of police coverage in rural parts of the state, backing away from immediately calling for an end to the practice of Vermont State Police contracting with small towns.

The bill that came up Friday originally said that towns that currently contract with the State Police for coverage could no longer do so. But the version approved Friday called instead for a study of the structure of law enforcement in the state.

That study is to be conducted by a special committee of eight members: two each from the judiciary and government operations committees in the House and Senate. It is to report its findings by Dec. 31, with recommendations for any legislative action it may see as needed.
