The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee has approved the nomination of a prosecutor to be a federal judge in western Massachusetts.

The 18- member committee on a voice vote Thursday approved President Obama’s nomination of  Hampden District Attorney Mark Mastroianni to be the presiding U.S. District Court Judge in Springfield. Mastroianni appeared before the committee on February 11th and so did Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren who urged swift action on the nomination.

" The vacancy has strained the federal judicial system in western Massachusetts, causing  cases to be postponed, forcing judges from Boston to travel to Springfield to hold hearings, and impeding the ability of citizens to get their day in court."

A confirmation vote in the full U.S. Senate  is likely in April or May.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
