The Massachusetts House is expected to vote Wednesday to repeal the new sales tax on computer software services.
The so-called “ tech tax “was part of a package of tax increases the Legislature approved in July to raise $500 million for transportation, education and local aid. But legislative leaders and Governor Patrick say they’ve been persuaded by critics, such as Michael Widmer of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation that the tax is bad for business.
House Speaker Robert DeLeo said because state tax collections were far ahead of benchmarks for the first two months of the fiscal year he does not believe repealing the $160 million “ tech tax” will result in a budget shortfall.
