Easthampton Mayor To Run For Vacant Massachusetts State Senate Seat

A western Massachusetts mayor has become the first Democrat to announce a run for a soon to be vacant state senate seat.

Michael Tautznik, the eight-term mayor of Easthampton, is not running for re-election this year, and said he had no plans to stay in politics until he heard about the surprise vacancy in the state senate.

Republican State Senator Michael Knapik is resigning Friday to take a job at Westfield State University.  State Representative Donald Humason of Westfield is the only Republican in the race, so far. A date for the special election has not been set.
