Vermont's Shumlin Urges Lawmakers Against More Taxes

Governor Peter Shumlin says he's sorry Vermont's gasoline and diesel taxes had to go up this year, and he's urging lawmakers to pass no other tax increases.

Shumlin's remarks on Thursday came a day after the state Senate approved a bill that contains tax increases. Among them are removing the sales tax exemption for bottled water and putting a new $12,000 cap on the home mortgage interest deduction.

Shumlin says he does not support those increases or others being pushed by the House.

He says he's confident he can work out his differences with lawmakers in the final couple of weeks left in the legislative session.
