The Housatonic River Walk – the only designated National Recreation Trail in Berkshire County - had its own origin 25 years ago. The half-mile trail along the Housatonic was pieced together over the years after a group of volunteers took it upon themselves to clear litter and debris to open a public outdoor space by the river. Housatonic River Walk’s Director Rachel Fletcher now says the walk, which is divided into two sections serves as an important historic site in Great Barrington…
River Walk is currently fundraising to trail management over to the Greenagers, with a goal of training youth in trail maintenance and conservation for years to come.

Beginning in May, the teenage volunteers will work on developing 10 gardens in the community, making a total of 30 gardens built by the program since it began. Will Conklin says the program gets youth to promote healthy living to the area’s residents.
The Greenagers program offers summer employment for Berkshire County teens age 15 to 20. The Greenagers also this week are volunteering hours for the Get Unplugged program. This week, the Berkshire South Regional Community center and Berkshire Co-op Market are holding workshops and activities all week to create a “screen-free” atmosphere, to keep youths active and outside.
