The mayor of Chatham is explaining his decision to put the village’s police chief on administrative leave.
Peter Volkmann, who also served as police commissioner of Hudson until his resignation September 19th, is on paid 30-day leave. Village Mayor John Howe:
"This action is related to the status of an ongoing investigation into certain matters by the New York Office of State Comptroller, the New York State Police and the district attorney's office in Columbia County."
Howe says investigators have retrieved information from village and police department computers. He says placing Volkmann on leave should not be seen as an accusation of wrongdoing or disciplinary measure.
