NYS Lawmaker Asks Governor To Allow Outdoor Graduations With More People

A New York state assemblyman from the Hudson Valley is urging Governor Andrew Cuomo to lift the limit on the number of people that may participate in a socially distanced, outdoor graduation.

Republican Assemblyman Colin Schmitt has sent a letter to Governor Cuomo, saying the 150 in-person limit at socially distanced graduations needs to be lifted, especially for larger graduating classes, and at schools with the ability and space to safely conduct outdoor ceremonies. Schmitt, whose 99th District includes a portion of Orange County and one town in Rockland, says six superintendents, including from Middletown, are among educators who signed his letter.  Cuomo announced on June 7 that he would allow socially distanced, in-person graduations beginning June 26, with a 150-person limit.
