A New York state senator is calling for Governor Andrew Cuomo to close outlet malls amid the coronavirus pandemic.

State Senator James Skoufis says he spoke with aides in the governor’s office Monday who told him there is a discussion about addressing malls in the state. Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in Orange County is in Skoufis’ 39th District.

“I’ve, over the past week, and especially over the past few days, have been on the receiving end of an avalanche of messages from employees at Woodbury Common, the stores in Woodbury Common, who are, rightfully, fearful and upset that they’re, in some cases, still being required to work,” Skoufis says.

He says a number of stores at Woodbury Common have voluntarily shut down.

“If we’re closing down, save for takeout, restaurants and bars, how do you make the argument that we keep open a place like Woodbury Common for the public safety?” says Skoufis.

Woodbury Common has modified its hours.
