Federal Lawmakers Urge NRC To Grant Public Hearing On Indian Point License Transfer

WAMC, Allison Dunne

New York congressional lawmakers are calling on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to hold a public hearing on a proposed license transfer for Indian Point for decommissioning.

The federal lawmakers have written to the NRC chair asking that the Commission hold a public hearing before taking any action to approve transferring the Buchanan-based Indian Point licenses from Entergy Nuclear Operations to a Holtec International subsidiary. They say New York state and other relevant interveners must be given an opportunity to present their views. U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Representatives Eliot Engel, Nita Lowey and Sean Patrick Maloney signed the letter. In a previous letter, Schumer, Gillibrand and Lowey had requested an extension of the public comment period beyond February 24. Indian Point Unit 2 is scheduled to permanently shut down in April and Unit 3, by April 2021.
