In a move to reduce vehicle emissions and fossil fuel dependence, the mayor of Yonkers, New York signed an executive order Tuesday.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano’s Green Fleet Standards for City Vehicles executive order directs transitioning the city’s fleet of more than 1,000 vehicles from gas to electric. There are new requirements for vehicle procurement, such as obtaining only electric vehicle, or EV, models of light-duty vehicles. Spano says the city will convene a Green Fleet Standards Review Committee to review all requests for new vehicle purchases, ensure compliance with the EV requirements and more. There are plans to roll out additional charging stations in the city’s business districts.
