Westchester Town Puts Status Change Of Three Elected Offices To The Voters

A town board in Westchester County is asking voters to consider converting three elected offices to appointed positions.

The Ossining Town Board will ask voters on Election Day whether they support the conversion of the elected offices of tax receiver, town clerk and highway superintendent to appointed offices. The vote is the culmination of the first phase of ProjectForward, a grant-funded effort by the town to engage voters on streamlining and modernizing town government. Town Supervisor Dana Levenberg says combining the offices of Tax Receiver and Town Clerk will save money. And the Highway Superintendent position only services residents in the unincorporated area of the town. Levenberg says the Westchester Towns of New Castle, Cortlandt, Yorktown, Greenburgh, and others have shifted at least one of the positions of clerk, receiver or treasurer, and highway superintendent from elected to appointed.
