A New York state assemblyman is urging the state education commissioner to review a grand jury report released Thursday. The report pertains to student-athlete attendance records and grades at the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.

Following an investigation that began in 2017, an Orange County grand jury has found staff at the school district altered student-athletes' attendance records and grades. Now, Republican 99th District Assemblyman Colin Schmitt has written to State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia, urging her to immediately review the report and take any action needed to hold the responsible parties accountable. State education department officials say the department takes allegations of testing and grading irregularities, and misconduct against educators extremely seriously, however, cannot comment on specific complaints. A school district website statement says the district will review the grand jury report recommendations.
