New York’s two U.S. Senators are calling on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to deem General Electric’s Hudson River PCB cleanup incomplete. The EPA has said it would decide on GE’s request for a Certificate of Completion in early 2019.

Democratic Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer have written to EPA acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler asking him to deny a certificate of completion to GE, echoing such a call from the New York state Department of Environmental Conservation. The senators urge EPA to work with GE and New York state to continue the PCB cleanup, citing concern that the cleanup is not sufficiently protective of human health the environment. GE spokesman Mark Behan disagrees, saying the data show conclusively that the Hudson River dredging project is working and will protect the environment as EPA predicted. He says GE looks forward to the EPA issuing a certificate of completion on the dredging project.
