NY Reps Call On USCG To Be Transparent In Any Anchorage Proposals

WAMC, Allison Dunne

Two Democratic New York congressmen have asked the U.S. Coast Guard to commit to transparency in any new anchorage proposals.

Congressmen Eliot Engel and Sean Patrick Maloney have written to the Coast Guard admiral asking that the Coast Guard commit to early public outreach and release an Environmental Impact Statement prior to any new anchorage proposals. In June 2017, the Coast Guard shelved a proposal for up to 10 anchorage sites from Yonkers to Kingston after widespread opposition. And though a Coast Guard report in March did not include additional anchorage sites among its recommendations, it has not ruled out future proposals. Engel and Maloney also requested that the Harbor Safety Committee for the Hudson River north of the George Washington Bridge become a permanent function of the Coast Guard.
