A New York state senator from the Hudson Valley has introduced legislation requiring school buses to have over the shoulder seat belts. This comes in the wake of multiple deadly school bus accidents across the country.

Democratic state Senator David Carlucci says his legislation would mandate the use of shoulder seat belts. The National Transportation Safety Board released its findings in May from a report that was prompted by the NTSB’s investigation of two deadly school bus crashes in November 2016, one in Baltimore, the other in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The report recommends that seat belts similar to those found in passenger cars be installed on all school buses nationwide. Carlucci says that, in New York, school buses are required to have lap belts, but it is up to school districts whether to mandate that students wear them. Only California requires over the shoulder seat belts on school buses.
