Orange County To Use TZB Panels For Its Bridges

WAMC, Allison Dunne

Orange County will receive panels that were salvaged from the Tappan Zee Bridge. The bridge is being dismantled, and the New York State Thruway Authority has been offering counties the panels for $1 each.

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus says using the repurposed panels will save taxpayers some $770,000. The panels will be used to build four highway bridges and two rail-to-trail bridges. The first to be built will be the Corwin Bridge in the Town of Mount Hope. The panels are expected to shorten the construction timetable to three months and reduce the cost by more than $160,000. Construction is set to begin in late summer. The New York State Thruway Authority is scheduled to deliver 14 of the 150 panels to Orange County’s Transfer Station, in New Hampton, starting May 14. Each panel is worth about $55,000. The concrete and steel panels are about 13 feet by 50 feet, 8.5 inches thick and weigh 50 tons each
