A New York state senator from the Hudson Valley has introduced legislation to allow law enforcement to treat certain threats as terrorism.

In the wake of the deadly February school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Republican state Senator Terrence Murphy is sponsoring a bill that would include mass shootings within the definition of terrorism. The bill clarifies that a school, house of worship or business could be considered a civilian population when targeted by a terrorist. The bill also codifies the New York State Intelligence Center. Republican Catharine Young is a co-sponsor, and says that by classifying mass shootings as terrorism, the bill would empower the New York State Intelligence Center to help prevent these crimes. The bill has two other co-sponsors, both Republicans.
