A potential Democratic candidate for an open New York state Senate seat in the Hudson Valley said Thursday he is no longer seeking his party’s nomination.

Yonker Mayor Mike Spano said the Westchester County Democratic Party leadership’s decision to move the nominating convention up to January 9 from March was the major factor in his decision. He says the new date leaves him little time to reach out to the 600 district leaders.

Yonkers state Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer, Bedford Town Supervisor Chris Burdick and founder of People for Bernie Sanders Kat Brezler are other Democrats who want the chance to fill the 37th District seat left vacant by Democrat George Latimer, who just took office as Westchester County executive. Also Thursday, former New York congressional and gubernatorial candidate Zephyr Teachout endorsed Brezler.
