An off-duty firefighter has been charged in a wrong-way crash that killed a newspaper deliverer in Westchester County, New York.
Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced Monday that Erik Refvik has been arraigned on charges that include aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter, and driving while intoxicated. Reyda La Madrid died in the November crash in White Plains. Her husband suffered serious injuries. DiFiore says the White Plains firefighter had been drinking for 12 hours. She says he went to at least four bars and only one refused to serve him. Authorities say Refvik's blood-alcohol level was double the legal limit. The DA says Refvik also had consumed cocaine, a prescription drug, and bath salts. His attorney declined to comment. La Madrid was an independent contractor for the Journal News' delivery firm.
