False Signal Shuts Down Indian Point Reactor

A reactor at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Westchester County that produces power for about a million homes automatically shut down Wednesday. The shutdown was in response to a false signal.

A spokesman for Buchanan-based Indian Point says Unit 3's safety systems kicked in around noon Wednesday after a sensor detected a reactor pressure change.  Spokesman Jerry Nappi says there was no change. He says the 1,000-megawatt reactor remains offline while workers determine the cause of the false signal. He says they'll fix the sensor before Indian Point 3 is restarted. Nappi says the plant's other reactor, Indian Point 2, is still operating and the shutdown should not cause outages because demand is not at peak levels. A spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the shutdown happened as workers were testing safety systems. He says there were no health or safety risks.
