Two bills concerning West Point have passed the New York state Assembly and Senate. They now await the governor’s signature.

Democrat James Skoufis sponsored the bills in the Assembly and Republican Bill Larkin, in the Senate. One bill clarifies the boundaries between West Point and the Town of Highlands. The legislation directs the state to cede jurisdiction of lands that have Stony Lonesome and the surrounding range areas to the United States, excluding U.S. Route 9W and State Routes 218 and 293. Skoufis says this clarification will alleviates Highlands’ emergency services, saving the town resources. Another bill would grant peace officer status to the U.S. Mint Police who are responsible for protecting the U.S. Mint at West Point. The U.S. Military Academy requested this legislation.
