Federal Funding Helps Substance Abuse Programs In Two NY Counties

A New York Congresswoman says federal funding is headed for some Hudson Valley organizations to help fight substance abuse.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey, the senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, has announced that ten local organizations will receive more than $1.3 million in federal grants to prevent substance abuse among lower Hudson Valley youth. Director of the Westchester County Office of Drug Abuse Prevention and STOP-DWI Vito Pinto says the most powerful tool to address problems of underage drinking and drug abuse is prevention. He adds that prevention begins at the local level through community coalitions, and these federal grants recognize these efforts. In Lowey’s 17th congressional district, those initiatives awarded grants include the Mount Kisco Drug & Alcohol Prevention Council; Cortlandt Community Coalition; the City of White Plains; Ossining Communities That Care; and the Westchester Coalition for Drug and Alcohol Free Youth.
