Concerned Residents to Hold Forum on Proposed Utility Merger

The New York State Public Service Commission is reviewing the proposed merger of Poughkeepsie, New York-based CH Energy Group and Canadian utility company Fortis. And a group of residents is holding a meeting this evening to express opposition.

The citizens’ group of 17 Ulster County residents is holding the informational meeting for elected officials and ratepayers in Central Hudson’s service area. Slated to speak are representatives from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 320; the Public Utility Law Project; along with State Assemblyman Kevin Cahill, or one of his staff members. Assemblyman Cahill has voiced his concerns about the project for a number of reasons, as have members of the citizens’ group, who say the North American Free Trade Agreement could constrain state energy policy. A Central Hudson spokeswoman has previously said that Central Hudson would retain its New York identity, and continue to be regulated and monitored by the state. The panel discussion, followed by questions and answers, is from 7-9 tonight in Lecture Center 100, at SUNY New Paltz.
