Gun Group Calls For Boycott of Journal-News Advertisers

The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association is calling for a nationwide boycott of the advertisers of the Journal-News. WAMC's Dave Lucas has more...

The association wants the Hudson Valley newspaper to take down maps posted on its website that disclose the names and addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties.

The gun group is urging citizens to avoid doing business with any company that advertises with Journal News parent company Gannett until the maps are removed.

On its website, the association argues that the Journal News has made no credible case, or any valid reason for releasing the data, and claims the maps serve no investigative or journalistic purpose. The group also states that it views the newspaper's action "as an attempt to intimidate and bully lawful gun-owning citizens."

Janet Hasson, the President & Publisher of The Journal News, did not immediately respond to a request for comment

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief. Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. Prior to that he hosted talk shows on WYJB and WROW, including the 1999 series of overnight radio broadcasts tracking the JonBenet Ramsey murder case with a cast of callers and characters from all over the world via the internet. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.
