New York state Republican Party chair Ed Cox spoke with WAMC today about Tuesday's electoral results. Among the topics discussed with Capitol Connection host Alan Chartock were the GOP's losses in the Senate and presidential race.

"We had huge wins in the House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate two years ago," Cox said. "I thought the country was ready to give everything to us. Well, they didn’t . They’ve gone back to saying , 'Hey we like checks and balances. You got it, now you guys go and work it out. That’s your job. We’ve got representative government. We’re going back to taking care of our lives.'"

Cox also touched on the easy win by Democratic U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand over attorney Wendy Long, giving the former upstate Congresswoman her first full term in the Senate.

"We have a very hard time winning statewide here," Cox said. "You need special circumstances to do it."

And with Romney’s loss  just hours old, Cox floated the name of another ex-Governor as a possible 2016 contender.

"Look, we’ve got a long way to go. But here in New York State, we have the go the way of Jeb Bush," he said. "He has been making sense all along about what we have to do."
