315 Area Code Change Begins Saturday

WAMC photo by Dave Lucas

Thanks in part to the proliferation of smartphones, the combination of seven-digit numbers has all but run out in the 315 and 518 area codes in upstate New York. Enter a couple of new codes and with them, 10-digit dialing.

Beginning Saturday, telephone subscribers within the existing 315 area code in central and northern New York will have to dial 10 digits when making a call. New numbers will be assigned the 680 area code.

The 518 will soon share customers with the 838. Mandatory 10-digit dialing begins August 19th throughout 518 country.  Area code overlays have been approved for both 315 and 518, meaning they share territory with new codes, as opposed to coding by geographic area, so no current phone numbers need to be changed. Subscribers will need to update speed dial systems and cellular contacts. Calls to 911 will remain three digits.
