Albany Attorney Launches Campaign For City Court Judge

Albany attorney James Long officially launched his campaign for City Court Judge Wednesday.

With 37 years of practicing law under his belt, Long, freshly-appointed Albany County public defender in February, paints himself as an "underdog" dedicating to "helping people."

"City court needs someone with my background and my experience. Someone who's been in the trenches down there, who can make a difference."

Long, supported by State Senator Neil Breslin, County Legislator Wanda Willingham and city councilmen Mark Robinson, Kelly Kimbrough and Ron Bailey, will face Albany County Democratic Committee candidate Joshua Farrell in a primary. Both seek to replace Judge Rachel Kretser, who decided not to run for a second term. According to The Times Union, Long would like to step down as public defender by June 1st, before ballot petitioning begins.

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief. Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. Prior to that he hosted talk shows on WYJB and WROW, including the 1999 series of overnight radio broadcasts tracking the JonBenet Ramsey murder case with a cast of callers and characters from all over the world via the internet. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.
