Capital Region School Will Close

Another Capital Region grade school is shutting its doors.  It's the end of a 145-year run for St. Augustine School in the Lansingburgh section of Troy. The school was in dire financial straits last year but got a reprieve from Bishop Edward Scharfenberger, who said if the community could spark enrollment, the doors would remain open. Meantime, enrollment slid down to 100 as debt ballooned past 300-thousand dollars. On Monday, Scharfenberger accepted parish officials’ recommendation to close the school at the end of this school year.
