The federal government's move to regulate e-cigarettes has support from an upstate New York official.
The Food and Drug Administration took the wraps off a 241-page proposal on Thursday, which will ban the sale to minors of tobacco products that are currently unregulated including e-cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco and hookahs. Albany County Executive Dan McCoy says measures need to be taken to keep the devices away from children. " To this date there has been no oversight of these products and it's clear e-cigarettes are being used more and more by minors. This is the one reason why issued an executive order in February banning use on country property."
The long-awaited proposal, which would subject the $2 billion industry to federal regulation for the first time, is not as restrictive as some companies had feared and will likely take years to become fully effective.
