Any Questions #245

WAMC's Ian Pickus and resident quizzer Mike Nothnagel are off to France for this week's show.

Last week's challenge
Start with the phrase MARRIAGE PROPOSAL. Rearrange the letters and you can spell a two-word term (5,11) that might describe what a marriage proposal might inspire in a skeptical bride. What are the words?
Answer: GROOM REAPPRAISAL.

THIS WEEK'S CATEGORY: THE EIFFEL TOWER
On-air questions: On May 6, 1889, the Eiffel Tower was officially opened to the public at the Universal Exposition in Paris. It cost two francs to walk up to the first level (the elevators were not in service until some three weeks later), three francs to go the second level, and 5 francs to climb the 1710 steps to the top level. By the end of the Exhibition, nearly 1.9 million people had visited the tower. I'm afraid of heights, so I'll let you go to the top and I'll stay down here on the ground and ask you some questions about the Eiffel Tower.

1. Eiffel received numerous criticisms over the feasibility and the necessity of his tower. He responded by saying, "My tower will be the tallest edifice ever erected by man. Will it not also be grandiose in its way? And why would something admirable in Egypt become hideous and ridiculous in Paris?" To what was Eiffel comparing his tower?
2. When it was completed in 1889, the 984-foot (or 300.6-meter) Eiffel Tower became the tallest free-standing structure in the world, surpassing the 555-foot-tall Washington Monument. In 1930, it was itself surpassed by which New York City building, widely regarded as a classic example of Art Deco architecture?
3. "Semolina Pilchard / Climbing up the Eiffel Tower / Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna / Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allen Poe" are lyrics from what 1967 Beatles song, the title character of which was taken from Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass?
4. A 1967 feasible but expensive plan to bring the Eiffel Tower to Montreal for Expo 67 between then-mayor Jean Drapeau and what French president was ultimately scrapped, fearing the tower wouldn’t be returned to its home in Paris?
5. What famous movie critic once said facetiously in his column that if a scene in a film is set in Paris, no matter where in the city it is, the Eiffel Tower will be visible in the background?

Extra credit
1. On the second level of the Eiffel Tower is a one-Michelin-star restaurant run by internationally renowned chef Alain Ducasse. The restaurant is named for what famous French science-fiction and adventure novelist?
2. Where is the only replica of the Eiffel Tower located in Florida?
