"Blood Play" at Williamstown Theatre Festival

Blood Play is the final show on the Nikos Stage atThe Williamstown Theatre Festivalthis season. The show is created by The Debate Society - a Brooklyn based company that creates new plays through the collaboration of Hannah Bos, Paul Thureen, and Oliver Butler.

The Debate Society was awarded a “Village Voice Best of Award” for “Best Argument for Devised Theater - 2010” and the trio of theatre artists are 2011 Sundance Institute Fellows.

In the darkly comic thriller, it's a tranquil suburban evening in the early 1950's: the kids are away on a Junior Cherokee camping trip and a string of coincidences leads to a spontaneous grown-up party in the basement of a new ranch house. Exotic cocktails are imbibed, raucous games are played, and new friends are made, but much is happening that no one is talking about. And something is stirring underground.

Oliver Butler joins us to talk about The Debate Society and about Blood Play.

In New York Mr. Butler has directed the world premieres of The Lapsburgh Layover, Buddy Cop 2, Cape Disappointment, Goodbye New York Goodbye Heart, The Eaten Heart, The Snow Hen, Red-Haired Thomas, Hostage Song, A Thought About Raya, You’re Welcome, and Christmas with the Flamingos. and several other productions. He was the Assistant Artistic Director of The Berkshire Theatre Festival where he directed The Einstein Project and This is our Youth, has assisted directors including Jo Bonney, Pam Mackinnon, and John Rando and in 2004 and 2005 he was a participating director in Lincoln Center’s Directors Lab.
