51% #1585: STIs Rise In The Military; Country Songwriter Has A Women-Only Label

Nicolle Galyon

On this week’s 51%, could online dating be partly responsible for an uptick in STIs among service members? An award-winning country music songwriter started a record that signs only women and writer Dr. Jeri Burns returns with an essay on ability privilege.

Military health officials say several sexually transmitted infections are becoming more common among service members. They say troops are engaging in more high-risk sexual behavior ... and part of the reason might be the popularity of smartphone dating apps. From Tampa, Florida, Stephanie Colombini reports for the American Homefront Project.

This story was produced by the American Homefront Project, a public media collaboration that reports on American military life and veterans. Funding comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Nicolle Galyon is an award-winning country music singer, songwriter and record producer. Her new record label, Songs & Daughters, is the first female-focused label in Nashville. She also runs her own scholarship foundation called Autobiography, which helps students from within Kansas — her home state — fund their college education. Add to her list of accomplishments winning BMI Writer of the Year in November. Prior, the recent female to win was Taylor Swift in 2010. Galyon was honored for four songs: “Tequila” by Dan + Shay, “Heart Break” by Lady Antebellum, “Boy” by Lee Brice and “Coming Home” by Keith Urban and Julia Michaels. Nicolle also won BMI Song of the Year for “Tequila.” Dr. Sharon Ufberg, with her 51% segment “Force of Nature,” starts with asking Galyon how she ended up where she is.

Dr. Sharon Ufberg is co-founder of the personal development/wellness company, Borrowed Wisdom, in California.

Dr. Jeri Burns is a storyteller, writer and educator living in New York's Hudson Valley. You can find her at storycrafters.com. Burns also is an adjunct professor in the Department of Communication at the State University of New York at New Paltz.
