We bring you another installment of the 51% segment called “Force of Nature,” from Dr. Sharon Ufberg. She is co-founder of the personal development/wellness company, Borrowed Wisdom, in Napa Valley, California. She regularly blogs for The Huffington Post. This week, she interviews Judi Shils, who is the Executive Director of TurningGreen.org. Shils has spent the last 14 years spearheading grassroots community projects. One of her recent projects is The Conscious Kitchen, which partners with schools to shift the paradigm around food service, based on five foundational terms: fresh, local, organic, seasonal, non-GMO (FLOSN). In August 2015, the Sausalito, California Marin City School District became the first district in the country to offer non-GMO, organic school lunches to its students. Conscious Kitchen serves more than 550 students some 120,000 meals a year sourced from local farmers, purveyors and businesses in the community. With thousands of teams all around the world, dragon boat racing has become a fast-growing sport. It’s also popular in the US and Canada, with festivals and races in places like Cleveland, Vancouver, and Buffalo. And as Elizabeth Miller of Great Lakes Today explains, there’s a surprising bond with one group in particular – cancer survivors.

New rules recently have gone into effect that detail how military leaders must treat transgender service members. It’s the latest step in the Pentagon’s effort to integrate transgender troops into the armed forces. Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced in June that transgender service members could serve openly. Patricia Murphy reports.
