NY grad, dropout rates continue to improve

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A federal report shows public high school graduation rates continue to improve as dropout rates decline in New York.

The U.S. Department of Education says there were 183,826 graduates in 2009-2010, an estimated 76 percent of the freshmen enrolled four years earlier. The rates were 87 percent for white students, 62 for blacks, 61 for Hispanics, 92 for Asians and 60 for Native Americans.

The statistics released Tuesday show the overall rate has improved steadily from 61 percent in 2002-2003.

The graduation rate was 78 percent nationally.

NEW YORK (AP) — Joe Johnson made the go-ahead jumper with 22 seconds left and scored 25 points, leading the Brooklyn Nets to an 88-85 win over the New York Knicks on Monday and a split of the four-game series between the city rivals. Deron Williams added 14 points and 12 assists for the Nets, who cut the Knicks' Atlantic Division lead to one game. Brook Lopez had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Kris Humphries came off the bench for 11 points and 13 boards. Tim Duncan's 24 points and 17 rebounds led San Antonio to a 90-85 win over Philadelphia. Tony Parker added 20 to help the Spurs recover after blowing a 17-point first half lead. Evan Turner had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Sixers.

Annual MLK march, service in Poughkeepsie

POUGHKEEPSIE – Speeches, songs and a march through the City of Poughkeepsie marked the annual Real Moral Majority Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day program on Monday.  Local community activists spoke about the life and times of the civil rights leader.

Dutchess County Legislator Joel Tyner, who organized the annual rally, addressed a theme that local money should be used for youth programs, not to build a new county jail.

Work to begin on $1B repair of NYC aqueduct tunnel

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Work is set to begin on a $1B repair of a main aqueduct carrying water from upstate reservoirs to New York City.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection says site preparation work will begin later this month for the 2.5-mile Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel. The project will allow the DEP to repair leaks in the Delaware Aqueduct.
