The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) will welcome back its resident companies -- New York City Ballet and The Philadelphia Orchestra -- to their summer home in Saratoga for a celebratory season that will feature masterworks from the classical cannon, alongside SPAC premieres and debuts. Before they arrive, SPAC will host the Freihofers Saratoga Jazz Festival, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will continue their residency, there educational programs and CulinaryArts@SPAC events. The New York City Ballet returns to Saratoga Performing Arts Center this week for a series of performances beginning tonight and running through July 22nd.The four unique programs highlighted by SPAC include premieres by Kyle Abraham, Justin Peck, and a program featuring three story ballets: Swan Lake, Fancy Free, and Firebird.The New York City Ballet performed at the opening ceremony for the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in 1966 and returns each year for their summer residency.To tell us more, we welcome Artistic Director of New York City Ballet and the School of American Ballet Jonathan Stafford. Justin Peck’s In Creases, the first work he made for the New York City Ballet, returned to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center Thursday for the first time since its 2012 world premiere. It proved one of the program’s two highlights, the other a superb performance of George Balanchine’s 1946 masterpiece, The Four Temperaments.

Ballet presents a world of imaginative order, and Wednesday at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the New York City Ballet illuminated three different approaches to order in dance. The Twentieth Century Masters program featured the two choreographers most entwined with NYCB’s history, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. The evening’s third genius, modern dance’s Merce Cunningham, created works that challenged ballet’s architecture but inspired Balanchine to have NYCB dance his 1958 Summerspace, which has returned to SPAC after a fifty-five year absence.

The full New York City Ballet company is at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, New York this week with six performances featuring the timeless works of Balanchine and Robbins, as well as the return of Merce Cunningham’s Summerspace and SPAC debuts by Jamar Roberts and Pam Tanowitz.The week kicked off with NYCB On and Off Stage and closes with “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”To tell us more we are joined by dancer Indiana Woodward.
