U.S. Rep. Markey Seeks to Keep Outside Money Out of Mass. Senate Race

BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Rep. Edward Markey is challenging all Democratic and Republican candidates in the race to fill John Kerry's U.S. Senate seat to agree to keep outside groups from spending money on political ads.

The Malden Democratic said he wants a deal similar to the so-called "people's pledge" agreed to by former Republican Sen. Scott Brown and Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren in last year's Senate race.

Clinton: Nobody more committed to security

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton insisted on Wednesday that the department is moving swiftly and aggressively to strengthen security at U.S. installations missions worldwide after the deadly Sept. 11 raid on the consulate in Libya.

In probably her last appearance on Capitol Hill as America's top diplomat, Clinton once again took full responsibility for the department's missteps leading up to assault at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Political observers widely expect Massachusetts Senator John Kerry to be confirmed as the nation’s next Secretary of State, leaving an interim Senate term to be filled in his wake. What they didn’t expect was the about-face this week by now retired Democratic Congressman Barney Frank, who announced that he would be interested in filling Kerry’s seat in the run-up to a special election.
